Some time after Din, Nayru, and Farore created Hyrule and left the Triforce at their point of departure, a great king ruled Hyrule. He kept the balance of wisdom, power, and courage in his heart, and justly ruled the land through the might of the Triforce. After the king died, his son should have inherited everything, but he could not inherit the entire Triforce, due to an imbalance of wisdom, power, and courage in his heart. The prince desperately sought the remaining pieces, but he could not find them.
One of the king's closest advisors, a magician, eventually told the prince that Princess Zelda was told something about the Triforce before the king's death. The prince asked his sister what she knew, but she would not tell. Then the magician, growing angry, threatened to place her into an eternal sleep if she would not respond. She still said nothing. The magician began to cast the spell, but the prince fought him off. Still, even in the heat of battle, the magician was able to cast the spell, and Princess Zelda fell to the ground in an eternal sleep. The magician then died.
The prince was distraught, and placed Zelda in a temple. He hoped that someday he could awaken her. So that the tragedy would never be forgotten, he declared that every female child born into the royal family would be given the name, "Zelda." This story is called "The Legend of Zelda."
